Biotechnology (Distance)

Graduate training in biotechnology at MSc level on Distant Learning Mode is a modification of the current two-year Master of Philosophy programme which has being running since 2003/2004 academic year to date. Training in MSc Biotechnology is designed to equip graduates with knowledge, skill, and research capability in the elucidation of plant and animal diseases, as well as manufacture of biological products that have capacity to provide therapeutic effects, serve as diagnostics and processing aids, industrial enzymes, biofuels and biochemicals for industrial applications, bioremediation/biorestoration of the environment, and enhance food security and safety.

 

Graduate training in biotechnology would provide a well-balanced program of coursework and research training leading to the production of a supervised thesis. The programme on Distant Learn mode will enable applicants who are currently employed in biotechnology-related jobs to equip themselves with current knowledge and practices in Biotechnology. The MSc degree programme is multidisciplinary and will involve of other departments to execute. These are Departments of Biological Sciences, Crop Science, School of Business, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Mathematics.

 

The objectives of the Biotechnology program (IDL) are threefold:

  1. To develop human resource with strong knowledge base for employment in biotechnology industry, academia and government
  2. To develop the biotechnology program to meet national and international standards of quality assurance.
  3. To train students to conduct basic and applied research to promote translation of research findings to practical applications in agriculture, environmental, pharmaceutical, industrial, and food value chain

 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

For M.Sc. Biotechnology programme, applicants must possess a good first degree (second class or better) in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Pharmacy, Biological Sciences, Agriculture, Chemical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, and Renewable Natural Resources. Applicants in Biotechnology-related managerial positions, self-employed, regulatory agencies and related fields. Such applicants and candidates with Second Class (Lower Division) or Bachelor of Education will to pass an admissions interview.
